Design and construction of a multifunctional harvester for medicinal plants equipped with saffron harvester head

Abstract:
Currently, most of the medicinal plants, especially saffron are harvesting manually with high costs. In this research a multifunctional harvester was designed and constructed, which the head of the machine is replaceable in order to use it for different crops and decrease the harvesting costs. There is a possibility for this machine to replace the head and use for different purposes. This research is mainly focused on two parts namely the machine itself and the head of the machine which is applicable for saffron harvesting so most of the calculations are done based on the saffron characteristics. The the head of the machine was designed considering the combination of two cutting methods of impact and shearing. In shearing method, one of the cutting edges is fixed and the other is rotation and cutting occurs when the moveable edge is impacting the saffron flower with high rotational speed. In lower speeds, the flower get stuck between the fixed and the moveable knifes and edges and transfers to the container after harvesting.
