Abstract:
The growing utilization of solid biofuels is unavoidably become intertwined with extensive international trade of bioenergy commodities. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to establish a clear and unambiguous set of principles for classifying solid biofuels, thereby facilitating efficient biofuel trading, and promoting a mutual understanding between sellers and buyers. This research work comprehensively outlines the various forms in which solid biofuels are traded. The employed classification system is based on the origin and source of the biofuels. Furthermore, the standardized characteristics of graded wood pellets, wood briquettes, wood chips, firewood, and non-woody pellets and briquettes are thoroughly evaluated to ensure adequate examination of the essential processes involved in controlling the fuel quality. The ENplus certification scheme, which was initially introduced in 2010 as a quality certification program specifically for wood pellets used in the heating market, is also described because this certification has become the prevailing standard for solid biofuel standardization.
