Abstract:
Municipal waste management is a critical aspect of urban sustainability. As the population in cities continues to grow, the amount of waste generated is also increasing, leading to various environmental problems such as landfills, greenhouse gas emissions, and pollution. In response to these challenges, the adoption of sustainable waste management strategies has been gaining attention. Sustainable waste management strategies aim to reduce the environmental impact of waste management practices and promote resource efficiency. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a valuable tool to evaluate the environmental impact of different waste management strategies throughout their entire lifecycle.
This review paper presents a systematic analysis of the literature related to sustainable municipal waste management strategies using LCA. The search was conducted in major databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The search terms used were "municipal waste management," "sustainability," "life cycle assessment," and their combinations. The articles were screened for relevance, and the selected articles were analyzed in detail.
In conclusion, sustainable municipal waste management strategies are essential for achieving urban sustainability goals. LCA is a valuable tool for evaluating the environmental impact of different waste management strategies. Waste reduction and recycling have been identified as the most effective strategies for reducing the environmental impact of municipal waste management. This review provides insights into the current state of sustainable municipal waste management strategies using LCA and highlights the opportunities and challenges for their implementation.
